I am from the same locality where jute mill tragedy is taking place for last 8 years. All of my neighbours, friends, and few of my relatives are in this way or that way connected to jute mills. Though my family is not related to jute mills, I have touching memories about it. Few years back, two of our tenants flee away at night , as they just were unable to pay rents. They were good people, we don't curse them for some amount of money. I saw people, whom I know for my childhood, in local market to just hoovering around fishes, they can't buy. I remember that they were the big buyers just few years before. Today I can buy, I have grown up in front of them, they are proud of and love us too. When I go to local market now, I am a substantial buyer in comparison to them, they tell the fish trader to give me the big one. They encourgae me to take their selected fishes, as well they confirm that the fish tastes really good. I feel embarassed and ashamed, I have left going to local market. Now the local traders tell me 'Bhai, amra ekhon ar valo jinish tulte pari na, tai tumi ar barir bazare asona. Tobe maje maje aiso, tumi nogod e keno amader subida hoi'. I really feel bad in festivals, as the same people move around with shattered structure and bites of all odds on face, once buyers have turned to poppers. My community is a dead community now. We do, what ever our capability permits us. It will be really a generosity from your part, if you come forward. I'm sure that a benevolent deed make people more calm, happy and strong from inside.
On the other part, I know how these mills died. I'm sorry to say that everyone concerned to these establishments raped them for last 30 years. No difference with government policy, politically annexed crook trade unions, BJMC and mill officials, suppliers, and of course once more the great trade union leaders. In my life, before this stalemate, I never saw any trade union leader to protest about on going burglary. Their competition was who can overthrow whom and burgle more. Every political leaders knew it and if I'm not wrong they received their due share. BJMC and Mill Officers lived royal life. Many of my friends are from this group. My family was dependent on a decent job in other sector, we never could think of matching with jute mill officers' lifestyle. Trade union leader were the 'kings' of the mills. What they did, writing about it is just wastage of time and place. Only one thing can be told, they did all just what they wanted. Government did all the things they are capable of doing (formulating the most stupid policies without conern to economic and management efficiencies and benefits. This is normal, when you depend on 'rented worthless foreign consultants and ' the mega masters of all trades' so called bureaucrats. In abroad, now I know many useless people who work as consultants in poor countries. Believe me, if they want to advise their own governments, their government will tell 'thank you, just get away'. As our tax payers don't ask for the accounts of public money from government, government can do anything. That's poor countries' governments.). First thing the mills' stakeholders should have been watchful about their interests, they never were. A vicious nexus crippled jute sector.
Now, when I see all these old wines are making hue and cry revival of jute sector with their very own blaming games , I just escape this news, as I can't bear it. I strongly beileve that till now jue industry in Bnagladesh has a future. Just look at India, they are growing more jute, setting up more mills. It's all about reorganization of this sector, where leasing out is not a bad short-term option. But the clauses of lease contracts, profiles and potentials of leasees, working plan of leasees, and lease contract monitoring are important aspects. A structural and role change in BJMC should be second thing. A local value chain should be developed, where government should come as a facilitator and guranter. Young people with ideas and energy are to be brought in ownership and mangement of this sector. As I know, product innovation, efficient technology, and vigorous and innovative marketing can revive our jut in world market in short time. I am sure, a conventional businessman will not do it. If young and educated entrepreneures are promoted, they can do it. Just think one, world market for bio-products is increasing like anything. Try to grab it for jute, it's all about brain. Rotten union leaders and officials can't deliver. I recognize the role of politicians even in this state of my country. For them, 'learn politics is not everywhere', if you keep destroying institutions, you are loosing opportunity of your politics. Have any politician courage to stand in front of hungry workers now and start his long talk? I support trade union, but crooky trade unionism must be prevented with iron hands. I think there should be owner-worker-regulator-fourth party partnership based workers benefits and working conditions monitoring and eforcement system for every industrial sector. I'm really worried for the next one, garment sector.
Economy is above bi-partisan politics. Look at India, they have forgot to impede economy for political purpose. Look at West Bengal, the communists are speaking against strikes and crooky trade unionism. They are doing to keep Tata there, where others are waiting to woo Tata in their home. This is economy, all about people's quality of life, first. I'm not a publicity manager of India, rather I'm opposed to thousands of indian foreign and domestic policy decsions. But we should learn all good things, no matter from whom. This is all about competitiveness, I cry for Zimbabewe people, I want to avoid it to happen to my people.
Help my devastated jute mill worker community members. Let's think about our country's prosperity and contribute from our own positions. Never say die, tomorrow never dies.

"owner-worker-regulator-fourth party partnership based"
Hello ochena,
I am quoting you here, "A local value chain should be developed, where government should come as a facilitator and guranter." "owner-worker-regulator-fourth party partnership based workers benefits and working conditions ". The people you need just to implement what you described in the above 2 sentances, will be nearly impossible to find in the government and in the big 3 political machines. This is the biggest problem our nation is facing.
Thanks,
Thanks ohena, as if I am listening to myself
Hello ochena,
Thanks for confirming my thoughts about our jute industry. One thing, when you are talking about India, it's economy, about West Bengle, about India's financial development, about India's knowledge based mgmt, you're facing huge problem. We have some people always here lived entire life in Bangladesh, they are part of our backward political machine, which created on it's turn cadres without knowledge, goes on blaming India for everything. They cannot learn from anybody, of course, they are not up to Japan or US, unfortunately, they are not wit enough to learn from India even. Let them read your article, and open their mouth, you will see up to their brain.
Thanks,
