Observing samples from the thousands of Bangladeshis in New York City told me that they were not giving a hoot of what's going on in BD due to their uncertain economic future in NYC.

Had a memorable experience in the Bangladesh Consulate in Manhattan near the UN. I went there for my mother's visa. The consulate counter was amazingly organized. The young guys, smartly dressed were providing courteous service using a numbering system like what you see in any DMV. When people's number was displayed, the counter called the number to provide service.

I waited for my turn and during the waiting period I heard few Bangladeshis verbally assaulted the counter officers. It was simply disgusting to see fellow Bangladeshis behaving like Bangladeshi mafias. I thanked the officer after I received my mother's visa.

I don't know why I felt so ashamed. Next morning I called the Consulate and expressed my shame. The person who answered my called recognized me. He was amazed with my call because that was the last thing he expected. They are used to verbal abuse from their Bangladeshi clients. He asked me if I could talk to the Vice Consul and I did.

I could feel the emotion of these fine people who were providing service to Bangladeshis and instead of getting a simple thank you, they received verbal abuse. I went one step further and sent an email to the Consul expressing the fine service the three front desk officers provided to me. I wanted to make sure my appreciation was documented.

The culture of verbal abuse flow thru the spines of Bangladesh society. e-Mela is another example.
