An unidentified Chinese tourist poses before the Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen, Thursday, March 19, 2009. A new Chinese-designed mermaid statue will swap places with the "Little Mermaid" when Denmark's famed icon travels to Shanghai for the 2010 World Expo. The design competition for the Chinese statue has drawn entries from four recognized Chinese artists, Per Brandt Larsen, a spokesman for the Danish Expo secretariat, said in Copenhagen on Friday. He said the winner of the competition will be announced in May. The swap is part of an agreement by Copenhagen to allow the Little Mermaid statue to leave its perch in the city's harbor for the first time since it was installed in 1913. The Little Mermaid, inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, is one of Denmark's biggest tourist attractions. The vote by the Copenhagen city council to send the bronze statue by Edvard Eriksen to Shanghai next April drew some criticism from Danes who objected to seeing her leave Langelinie pier.
