Ittefaq of 16th August, 1975 stated “Armed Forces under the leadership of Khondaker Mustaq Ahmed have assumed power.” Under Mr. Ahmed’s leadership the Armed Forces have overthrown the Government of President Mujibur Rahman in the larger interest of the country. While resisting his overthrow Sheikh Mujib got killed at his residence. It may also be mentioned that in Mr. Patwari’s edited Ittefaq “Innan Elahi” was not printed anywhere in the paper for Mujibur Rahman. Some extracts of the editorial captioned “ A NEW START” of the newspaper of the same day stated – The head of the Army, Navy and Air force have pledged their full support to the Hon’ble President and to the new Government. About the achievement of the country in the last three and half years it can be said in one sentence that it brought only misery and poverty to the people. In place of economic upliftment of the people, the Government indulged in nepotism and rampant corruption and served the interest of a few persons. The people of this country were deprived of all the benefits of the liberation war. To remain permanently in power, the ruling clique played various strokes in the chessboard. These caused great resentment in the hearts of the seven core people of Bangladesh. The previous ruling clique had abolished all means of a peaceful change over of Government and therefore, no constitutional means were available to bring about a change. This necessitated the armed forces to intervene. The popular Maulana Bhasani welcomed the change and called for divine blessings for the new government.
Immediately after the new government took, all the three service chiefs pledged their allegiance to the new Government. They were Maj. Gen. Shafiullah, Rear Admiral M.H.Khan and Air vice Marshal A.K.Khondaker. This Shafiullah and Khondoker are trying to divert the attention in the name of war criminals. So to say that some stray military officers by breaking the chain of command conducted the 15th August incidents is a blatant distortion of history.
