There was a post/blog here about the validity and worthiness of the Nobel Prize of Professor Yunus. I just want to comment on that.
My main point is that Dr Yunus is very much worthy of the Nobel.
So please know more before putting emotional arguments against it, or wrongfully worshiping him as a saint for winning the Nobel. There are 800 people since 1900 who have won the Nobel. 130 of them were in peace, the rest are in physics, chemistry, medicine/physiology, literature, and economics (strictly the economics prize is Nobel memorial Prize - but carries the same prestige and money).
Please look at the list of Nobel Laureates in peace and their achievements to get a feel for what gets someone a Nobel in peace. And you will see that Dr. Yunus certainly has the criteria. Fazle Hasan Abed of Brac also meets the criteria and therefore Nobel-worthy. He may get the prize in ten years, or may not get at all.
Now why do I say Yunus meets the criteria? It used to be that Nobel peace prizes were awarded for making peace treaties, conflict resolutions - because that is what is in Nobel's will. But the committee has expanded the definition of the award by including all the other activities that contribute to peace. Such as humanitarian activities - example Albert Schweitzer in 1952, Mother Theresa in 1979, etc. If someone can help tenfold the food production, that reduces hunger and also contributes to peace. Therefore a plant genetic researcher named 'Norman Borlaug', (who produced high yield wheat, maze and other researchers followed with rice)- the father of 'green revolution' in the sixties and seventies also won the Nobel in 1970. It is said that he saved over a billion people from starvation - and most of that in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. There are also Nobel Laureates who are not that well known internationally but have made significant contributions. Recently environmental contributions have also been awarded such as in 2007 to Al Gore, and in 2004 to Wangari Maathai of Kenya. Now the Nobel committee thought they should recognize and award someone working in poverty reduction. Now please tell me who should they pick in that topic from the whole world other than Professor Yunus?
Now I have never taken a Grameen laon, and neither have you who are reading this. But how can you deny sitting in a comfortable chair in front of a computer that those poorest of the poor were not helped by the Grameen bank. Why are there millions of people taking the loan and trying to feed their family then? If you are an economist, you can seat with graphs and numbers and try to prove that poverty was not reduced overall. So what? Look at millions of people who were helped. If it did not work out for some - that's ok too. I have seen a lot of people do not like things such as Hilsa or Mango. The main contribution why Yunus was picked was this idea that credit can go to the poor. This has been replicated in 50 other countries, and millions of people got out of poverty. If it had not been replicated in other countries successfully, Yunus would not have been worthy of the Nobel.
Some complain that Grameen has high interest rate. I don't think those people at Grameen are trying to become millionaires. The cost of operation is quite high for such people intensive loan programs. Have you ever thought that some of us are taking high interests loans from high charging credit cards just so we can have more money or purchase fashionable items. Please show me a Bengali living in North America who does not have these fashionable credit card loans. I am telling it fashionable loans because if you compare it to the poorest of the poor Grameen loans - you will see that they use the loan to generate income and to survive, on the other hand most credit card bank loans are not used to generate income but only for spending - occasionally it helps poor students to buy food/pay tuition though. So it has its usefulness among some poor people too. Anyway, long story short, if you are not poor enough to take a Grameen loan, don't trash it. Those people surely would have revolted and not taken these loans to survive if it had negative impact in their lives.
So if this micro-credit thing is a good idea and implemented so widely, someone has to be rewarded - and Yunus was picked for that. If it's a bad idea it simply will not survive after 100 years - but you cannot deny the millions of lives that were helped. Most Nobels are not given on a 200 year timescale. Even some objective science prize ideas do not survive for 100 years.
Other aspects - this year Maarti Ahtissari of Finland was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He is part Norwegian. He commented that he thought he would be ignored for the Nobel for being a Norwegian since the Peace Nobel is selected by Norway - the other Nobels are by selected by Swedish academies. Now some people think since Grameen phone's partner Telenor is a Norwegian company - so it must be that there's something fishy here. This idea is totally wrong. When Tagore got the Nobel, similar things were told that he met some Swedish prince or something etc etc. When Iqbal Quadir, the founder of Grameen phone wanted investment from a foreign company, it very well could have another mobile company other than Telenor. I think foreign investments especially in technology is good for Bangladesh in the short term - it creates a competitive field and opportunities for homegrown technologies to develop. Don't you wish some big technology companies - Microsoft, Intel, Google, Oracle, Motorola, Sony would get more active in Bangladesh.
Now the politics part - Dr. Yunus is not a politician. In fact, before winning the Nobel - I never heard him say anything about politics in our country. I would trust him more when he says something about Economy, and not about politics. Politics in our country is sometimes dirty - civil society should have influence over people independent of what party is in power. There are 70 or so Nobel Laureates (I am not kidding) currently in the US. Their involvement makes US the top country in science and technology and ideas. They may support some party - but they are not really politics people. So why do we expect so much from Yunus that he will fix this or that. He made one attempt to create a party for the good of the country - but he realizes that that's not really his job or expertise. If 150 million people quarrel everyday, then who can do anything. He is an economist - let him do his job in that. He can do more good for the country that way. And don't bash him or put him in any party identity. Or expect too much from a single person.
Another question - why was Yunus not awarded a Nobel in Economics? It is because Economics Nobel is a science/academic award. People who get this usually write a lot of research papers, proposes theory, and have some proven contribution to Economics. Yunus does not quite qualify in that category. But that's okay. People usually qualify in one category whether you are Einstein or Tagore.
Another point - of the 800 or so people who got the Nobel in last 100 years - not everyone's contribution the same. Einstein and Bohr got the Nobel in physics, but so did many other physicists with smaller contributions who do not measure up to their caliber. Tagore got Nobel in literature, but so did many other people in different languages who do not measure upto his contributions. Gandhi was Nobel-worthy but did not get the Nobel, but certainly has done more than most Nobel peace laureates. Edison or Tesla did not get a Nobel in physics because of some controversy or definition of the prize, but certainly they belong to the greatest benefactors of mankind, similarly many people in IT such as Alan Turing, Tim Barners-Lee who gave birth to revolutionary ideas. So getting a Nobel prize/or being a top contributor in any field puts you in a different league among the common people, but those people do not all have the same caliber.

Dr.Younus first dream is fulfill
My Mama (uncle)'s first dream is fulfill & now his second dream is started: [Dear readers Dr.Younus is my uncle (un-luckily). Every one knows he got an honorable Nobel Prize, now I am waiting for that, what honor and Prize will he get for destroying Bangladeshi economy & fulfill of the agenda of WORLD BANK & IMF by support of his friend Dr.Fakruddin Ahmed)].Dr.Fakruddin's government destroyed Bangladeshi economy. I wish that will not recover in 20years. Now World Bank,IMF & Gramen Bank will get more interest. Younus & Dr.Fakruddin is glory to the country. Both are known how can do business with the poor peoples.
That time Awami League leader Seik Hasina told'Sood Khoor(younus)& Gush Khoor (Dr.Fakruddin's) combination. Both of you have new formula how can invent more poor peoples increase in the country.
There is a slogan in hindi'Garibi nahi hotao, garib ko hotao'(Not remove poorness, remove the poors).He(Dr.Fakruddin) got a good partner like Miza Aziz as economic adviser for do that.
I wish in 35 year publics trying escape from tigers (politician, but they see now in front of them are lions(doctors).
All doctors together can't change publics luck but change their luck (Dr.younus, Dr.Kamal, Dr.Devprya, Dr.mogaffar, Dr.Badrudoza, Dr.Iftikar, Dr.Fakruddin,Dr.Iazuddin Etc.Bahot din ka baat doctor lok maza lele ek saat (After many days all doctors are enjoying in one time with poor-men's blood. Or as our chief army general Moin U Ahmed told "kick the abdomen of the poors".
I wish you all doctors now understand why publics are support a metric pass lady Kaleda or chatterbox lady Hasina.
They are the well wishers for the publics not for themself.Durnity(corruptions)Purnity story was wrote by Mahafuz Anam of Daily Star & Moti Mea of Protom Alo.Now you can ask them Kaha hai Durnity(where is that corruptions)? If there was Durnity(corruption)how can the countries Urnaty(how can they progress the country? Or all doctors are go to metric pass lady Kaleda or chatterbox lady Hasina for take a lesson how can they work for the country. Ask them 'TOMADER CILO DURNITY(you were involved with corruptions)!KEMNE KORLA DESHER ETO UNNATHI (how can you improve the countries economics)?
How you were controlled market price.EKON SOKALE EK RATE DEKI TO BIKALE AREK RATE (If morning time is one market price than evening time is another market price)! Now where is Tareq's syndicate? Public now thinking there was no syndicate but now there is Doctors syndicates & Moin U Ahmed's syndicates are looting Bangladesh & Bangladeshis.
SalimC please write logically
Mr Salim, please think logically and talk rationally. Don't just write Faka Buli.... There has to be some evidence or logic behind writing. Anybody can write anything, very artistically, that does not mean that others will accept that (if someone not pre-occupied biased). Please don't be so much politically biased.... Be country biased..... Interest of the country comes before your Neta Netris. Or, you want to say that I am wrong? Do express yourself clearly about it.
Please read the above postings in total and then counter those rationally. Don't just write your self invented items. For your refreshment, I would like to repeat below my own old paras again....
"My friend, were we people so much adamant against Dr Yunus before he entered politics? Did Mr SalimC, you wrote so much against him before? Then why you are doing so after he entered politics? Any idea? Because, our existing boro party ra kokhon o chai na je tader against e keu uthe ashuk. But why, is it band to form any party in democracy? If not, then what’s wrong with Yunus? Because, they understood it well that, Dr Younus has the potential to lead the nation better than them, as well as has the potential to become a challenge to their permament rajotto in this country. And that is why all these type of 'Shondeho' has been incorporated by them. And we general people, sagoler tin number bacchara, just echoing the same.
Think personally, a person, at this late age, after reaching such level of honour, will try to achieve further which will keep him as legend for the nation in history even after death. You may not agree but listen, at that stage of life becoming future history is more preferred than to be chor(spy) of some other country for money. Try and understand it and please avoid diminishing our country pride by unnecessary 'Shondeho' incorporated by our awful political parties..... Regards."

Appreciable thought ...............
I would like to appreciate your excellent write-up. We got an in depth idea on the issue.
However, probably our next friend commenting on your write-up did not read in total or did not understand, or otherwise, we could not make out what he actually wanted to express.
There are some routine argument is going on in e-mela Blogs either in favour or against the issue. I also participated in some. Trying now to add some here taking bits from my earlier comments also.
I really don't understand the motivation our these people. Why they are so much dead-against the achievement of Nobel by Dr Yunus? These types of people tend to put up their self designed 'wrong concept' about Micro economics or Grameen Bank etc etc.... but do not at all think about the gain and loss for the country through his achievement. They are trying their best to destroy such highest level of achievement of our country. Whereas, rest of the world, who are not even our people, are appreciating his achievement every day. Seeing our these quarrels, are they not laughing at us? Shameful part of ours.
My question to our these citizens, were we people so much adamant against him before he entered politics? Why we became such, after he entered? Any idea? Because, our existing boro party ra kokhon o chai na je tader against e keu uthe ashuk. But why? Is it band to form any party in democracy? If not, then what’s wrong with Yunus? Because, these Neta Netries (party leaders) have understood it well that, Dr Younus has the potential to lead the nation better than them, as well as has the potential to become a challenge to their permament rajotto in this country. And that is why all these type of 'Shondeho' has been incorporated by them. And we general people, sagoler tin number bacchara, just echoing the same. Haire Bangali........

Finally again thanks to Ruposhi Bangla for your genuine thoughts and making us educated on the topic. Regards.

Thanks for your writing-Your head is full of man-shit
Why Dr. Younus is worthy to get the Nobel Prize?
Do you remember 1974?
Can you tell how many people died due to starvation, malnutrition, epidemic?
Do you know who are the people who died?
Do you know Bangladesh is a country of 150 million people?
Do you know If half of the population die without food than it will be threat to world peace?
Do you know the other country in the world are really worried to welcome any refugee from our country?
Because of Dr. Younus over the years Bangladesh has avoided so many 1974, Isn't it?
And our food problem, refugee problems not disturbed the other countries too much.
That is the peace. The most appropriate peace award till date awarded by the nobel peace award committee.
If you think, your head got some Gilu other than Shit, than come to Grameen bank area office or Brac research centre try to experience first hand, how they are working, how many people are working, who are the real beneficiary? How the country avoided so many famines?
To JackRaihan
You simply do not know enough to comment here. The world has many problems - a person can only do a very small part. A Nobel in Peace does not mean that he has to be this all-saving individual - he simply has to do more than the common folks in a specific area - that's all. Analyze 1974 - blame the politicians or whoever responsible for that. What does Yunus have to do with those? You just simply do not understand. There are 10 Nobel peace laureates in the US - does not mean that US people are in peace. Yunus helped some poor people, how many have you helped? Yunus was not awarded for bringing peace to Bangladesh in general, but rather to some poor people in Bangladesh and many other countries who benefited from micro-credit. Mother Teresa worked with many lepers, and sick people, and orphans. Mother Teresa certainly did not help you or me - but why would you deny her contributions to the people that she helped. It did not mean that Calcutta became a heaven. But it's an effort which was more than what other people did. So learn to appreciate. And do some research and try to understand before you open your foul mouth.
Is Dr. Yunus is your pal or
Is Dr. Yunus is your pal or mate? Is it too difficult to write Dr. Yunus? Or your education never taught you how to pay proper respect to a respected person?
Whether the famine is an artificial one or an original one who cares? The point is so many people died without food.
The people should be blamed for that famine, still country is ruled by those kind of people. Isn't that? There is food scarcity, there is famine but not that extent. Why? Because people like Dr. Yunus are there who helped the nation atleast floating the head above the water level not to sink fully.
You mentioned Dr. Yunus helped some people. No. It is not that. He helped many people.
And you have asked me how many people "I helped?" What a goat you are? This question should be mine to you, How many people you helped?
To Delware Hossain
Look. Please don't comment once against Yunus and then once for him, just so you can bash me. I am glad that you understood that he is worthy. If someone can bring genuine peace to 150 million people then he/she is above many Nobels - it's only a specific work that Nobel recognizes. When someone's name is in history books you can just write the name as it is - Einstein, Newton, Darwin - Da Vinci, Picasso, Tagore, Dickens, Tolstoy - Washington, Jefferson - Mujib, Zia. You don't have to add any prefix. So get an education. And stop your idiocy. Bye.
