Zillur greets Hamid Karzai for re-election as Afghan President

President Zillur Rahman on Thursday extended his hearty congratulation to Afghan President Hamid Karzai for his re- election as the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. In a congratulatory message, President Zillur Rahman said "this victory is a clear reflection of the confidence that the people of Aghanistan have on your leadership."

Primary bids floated for elevated expressway

The government on Thursday sought expression of interest from the international investors to construction an elevated expressway in the capital which some experts believe would be less viable in solving the city’s nagging traffic problems. Transport experts and city planners preferred dedicate bus services, more space for the pedestrians and creation of a circular waterway to elevated expressway and metro rail to solve the city’s nightmarish traffic snarls.

Govt focuses on fugitives : Prepares to press hard to bring home 6 other killers

The government will make fresh diplomatic efforts soon to have six of the 12 condemned killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mijubur Rahman extradited or deported back home, to bring them to justice. As part of the efforts, Dhaka will soon write to governments of all countries seeking their help in bringing the absconding killers back.

Execution process begins as judgement reaches jail

The process for the execution of death sentences of the five detained death-row convicts in the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman murder case already began on Thursday as the jail authority received the copy of the Appellate Division’s verdict a few hours after its pronouncement.

Prepaid gas metre for Dhanmondi

Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd will introduce prepaid gas metre for its residential consumers in the city's Dhamondi area. Initially, 5000 prepaid meters will be installed in Dhamondi area under a pilot project within next two years. After observing the success, other areas will be brought under the prepaid metering system.

Verdict to be executed by early Jan: Qamrul

State Minister for Law Advocate Qamrul Islam said the Supreme Court verdict, endorsing the death sentence on ex-army officers in the Bangabandhu murder case, will be executed by the end of December or early January after completing entire legal process.

Bangladesh backs Saudi action on Yemen border

Bangladesh has supported Saudi Arabia’s military action against Houthi fighters who have allegedly entered the kingdom’s territory illegally from Yemen. Dhaka expressed concern at the ‘incidents’ along the Saudi-Yemeni border and condemned the ‘incursion by the infiltrators’.

PM returns home from Italy

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina returned home on Thursday morning from Rome after a four-day official visit to Italy. She went to Italy on November 15 to attend the World Summit on Food Security-2009, arranged by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

Interference of MPs, officials must end :Upazila parishad representatives demand

Elected representatives from different upazila parishads at a roundtable yesterday demanded that the lawmakers and bureaucrats refrain from interfering in the parishad affairs. Terming the upazila parishad paralysed, they said 10 months have passed since they took oath but they are yet to participate in the parishad activities. They urged the government to specify their scope of work.

Revenue rises on money-whitening

Revenue earning from the construction sector increased sharply in the first three months of this fiscal year (FY) as whitening black money was allowed. But earning from a major sector -- power -- decreased due to a fall in power generation. This was found by analysing earning from income tax, value added tax (VAT) and import tax in the first three months of the current FY.
