Interference of MPs, officials must end :Upazila parishad representatives demand

Elected representatives from different upazila parishads at a roundtable yesterday demanded that the lawmakers and bureaucrats refrain from interfering in the parishad affairs. Terming the upazila parishad paralysed, they said 10 months have passed since they took oath but they are yet to participate in the parishad activities. They urged the government to specify their scope of work.

Revenue rises on money-whitening

Revenue earning from the construction sector increased sharply in the first three months of this fiscal year (FY) as whitening black money was allowed. But earning from a major sector -- power -- decreased due to a fall in power generation. This was found by analysing earning from income tax, value added tax (VAT) and import tax in the first three months of the current FY.

Bangladesh wants $10b to fight climate change

Bangladesh said Tuesday it would need 10 billion dollars from rich countries in the next four years to offset the effects of climate change -- double its original estimate. The government had previously said it would seek five billion dollars at next month's climate summit in Copenhagen to help it adapt to increased flooding, cyclones and droughts.

NBR plans to engage students to find missing TIN holders

The National Board of Revenue (NBR), handicapped by shortage of manpower, has decided to engage university students to find out the holders of taxpayer's identification number (TIN) missing the November 12 tax returns filing deadline. The board said nearly 1.5 million TIN holders out of 2.2 million did not file tax return by the specified time.

32.5 km Elevated Expressway :$2b project up for tender today

The Ministry of Communications is finally floating tender today for building an elevated expressway of 32.5 kilometres or more in Dhaka on a public private partnership (PPP) basis. The Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) under the ministry will receive pre-qualification documents for this $2 billion project from interested bidders till January 20.

The law-enforcing agencies will take special plans to prevent acts of sabotage over the announcement of the final verdict of Bangabandhu murder trial on Nov 19, the home minister said yesterday. "The law-enforcing agencies have been instructed to be watchful so that no unpleasant incident occurs following the verdict," Sahara Khatun told reporters after a meeting on the state of law and order at the Secretariat.

Parliamentary sub-committee to probe GATCO graft

A three-member parliamentary sub-committee was formed Tuesday to investigate the alleged corruption in tender process of Kamalapur Inland Container Depot for awarding work order to GATCO during the BNP coalition rule. Entire top order of the past government, including former premier Khaleda Zia, landed in jail in the GATCO graft case filed by the past interim regime amid an anti-corruption crackdown amid state of emergency.
