Germany to put pressure if poll not held on time

Faulting the appointment system of the Public Service Commission, Akbar Ali Khan said yesterday that there is no constitutional basis for the present Bangladesh Civil Service quota system. Speaking at the review of a report on the 'Quota system for civil service recruitment in Bangladesh', the chairman of the Regulatory Reforms Commission urged the government to revise BCS quotas and appoint more civil servants through examinations on the basis of merit.

Truth Commission: Anti-graft bodies, court to send corrupt people

The Truth and Accountability Commission will have the power to hold closed-door hearings on corruption or corrupt practices in certain cases, although there will be provision of public hearings. The draft of the proposed law, "Voluntary Disclosure Ordinance, 2008" says the Commission may hold such hearings if there is a "likelihood" that an open hearing will result in harming the person concerned.

U.N. says poverty eradication slows in Asia-Pacific

The rate at which poverty is falling across the Asia-Pacific region is slowing despite a burst of largely urban wealth creation, a United Nations report said on Thursday, blaming the setback on a neglect of agriculture.

It argued that raising farm labour productivity and liberalising global trade in agricultural products could lift more than 250 million Asians out of poverty.
