Hasina urges KL to give maximum facilities to Bangladeshis

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today urged the Malaysian government to provide maximum facilities for Bangladeshis working in Malaysia. She made the call when a five-member delegation led by Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Dato’ Haji Muhyiddin bin Mohd. Yassin paid a call on her at her hotel suite here.

AL men cautioned against rally, procession after Nov 19 verdict

State Minister for Law Advocate Qamrul Islam on Tuesday asked the Awami League leaders and workers not to bring out any procession or hold rally after the final verdict on Bangabandhu assassination case on Thursday. After a meeting at the home ministry, the state minister told reporters that they asked the party men to stay calm and not to get over-excited over the verdict.

1000 MW Russian nuke unit planned

Russia will build a complete 1000 megawatts nuclear power plant in Ruppur charging a minimum cost from Bangladesh. The government informed it at a meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on Science and Information Technology yesterday.

Bangladesh 139th among 180 countries in TI index

Bangladesh has shown a remarkable progress in eliminating corruption as it has been placed 139th among 180 countries in the Transparency International’s (TI) annual Corruption Perception Index (CPI) for 2009. Bangladesh has moved eight steps up from last year’s 147th in the index with an increase of 0.3 point on a scale of 0-10, according to the report released in Dhaka on Tuesday at a press briefing.

Muhith rejects restoration of banking division in ministry

Finance minister AMA Muhith has turned down the proposal for restoring the banking division in the finance ministry as the number of the government-run banks has diminished in the last few years and the ministry does not need to have much of a say in their affairs and operation, said officials.

Dhaka seeks closer ties with Indian states

Govt cancels all daily leases of riverbanks

The government cancelled all daily leases of riverbanks used for storing sand and brick for commercial purposes, now that an eviction drive is on to free the country's rivers from occupiers following a binding High Court order. After a meeting of the Task Force on maintaining navigability of major rivers at the ministry of shipping Sunday, the shipping minister, Shajahan Khan, told reporters that 'the yearly and long-term leases will also be cancelled'. He said BIWTA had been asked to reclaim the occupied lands in those areas.

DCC election in March: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr ATM Shamsul Huda here on Sunday said, election to the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) will be held in March and the municipalities in May next year. He also said, election to the Union Parishad may be held in September-October. He, however, said no date has yet been finalized or announced but we are doing some projections in this regard.

Integrated civil-military relationship helps democracy: Imam

Civil-military relationship is needed to be coordinated and integrated to strengthen democracy of the nation, said HT Imam, an adviser to the prime minister. Imam made the remark while inaugurating a four-day workshop on national security and civil-military relation in Bangladesh.
