Danish Ambassador tells Action Aid confce: Copenhagen meet to see big deal

Danish Ambassador to Bangladesh Einar H Jensen hoped Sunday that a big deal will be made in the Copenhagen Summit on climate change this December that will help the countries like Bangladesh. "I am still hopeful that a deal will be made, one that will be helpful for Bangladesh… secure package for adaptation for countries like Bangladesh," he said at a programme organized by Action Aid Bangladesh.

Sidr Day observed

The tragic Sidr Day was observed yesterday in different parts of the country, specially the southern region, through various programmes. The programmes included discussion meeting and placing wreaths at the graveyards of the victims and Sidr memorials. Mineral export can fetch Tk 12,000cr: experts

Bangladesh has deposits of at least 1.74 million tonnes of minerals worth over Tk 12,000 crore in the beach sand of vast areas stretching from Najirtek of Cox’s Bazar Sadar to Teknaf, experts said. ‘The total amount of mineral deposits in the beach sand is estimated to be 4.4 million tonnes. The actual heavily rich minerals are around 1.75 million tonnes,’ said former chairman of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission Anwar Hossain.

Bangladesh must be saved, UK Parliament told

A senior British politician Frank Dobson MP told UK parliament this week that worldwide action is needed to rein in climate change and save the most at-risk countries like Bangladesh. The Labour MP and former health secretary, terming it ‘the most vulnerable’ country, said Bangladesh could only be saved by supporting long-term climate adaptation plans on a ‘vast scale’. ‘Nothing else will do,’ Dobson said during a five-hour debate on climate change in the House of Commons last Thursday.

HC asks IGP to stop earth-filling, encroachment of Turag

The High Court on Tuesday directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to stop within 48 hours earth-filling and encroachment of river Turag. The court also directed the government authorities to stop earth-filling and encroachment of river Buriganga, Turag, Balu, and Shitalakhya until the ongoing survey of the rivers is completed as per the earlier HC directives.

PM for Int'l team on climate change under UN

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called for forming an international committee under the auspices of the United Nations to oversee the impacts of climate change on different countries. Hasina also stressed the need for forming the committee to expedite the efforts for rehabilitating the victims of the perilous fallout of global warming while visiting French Minister for Ecology, Sustainable Development and Planning Jean-Louis Borloo paid a courtesy call on her at the Prime Minister’s Office on Thursday.

Eco-friendly tourism project underway in Cox's Bazar

The Cox's Bazar district administration has taken up a project to develop a plantation of coconut and date trees along the sea beach to check land subsidence and promote an environment-friendly tourism industry. The plantation would be grown in five rows along a stretch of 110-kilometre-long sea beach running from Nazirartek to Teknaf, officials said. A demand letter seeking Tk 2.53 crore was sent to the forest and environment ministry for implementation of the project.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today called the global community for tackling challenges of climate change together to make the world a harmonious abode and leave a better planet for the next generation. "Let us embrace one another's responsibility, burden, prosperity, and live in harmony within our planet capacity… . . let us leave a better world for our children and their progeny thereafter," she said.
