THE long and winding road to democracy never really ends for any country. Even the world's oldest democratic nations must continually adapt to the changing requirements of their political environment. For younger democracies, the challenge can be compounded by the need to develop not only the institutions but also the culture of democratic practice.
"We were comrades in arms, we fought together shoulder to shoulder," said Lt Gen (retd) JFR Jacob, former chief of general staff of eastern command of India.
The then Indian Army commander of the eastern front said this yesterday as he was reminiscing Bangladesh's Liberation War of 1971 at a reception in the capital's Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre.
Former chief of the Indian army's eastern command Lt Gen (retd) JFR Jacob yesterday said it was the freedom fighters' gallantry that liberated Bangladesh from Pakistan occupation.
He said the full credit goes to them. They have done the real job and their acts of valour won the nation independence.
Ten retired Indian army generals who fought in the Liberation War will be awarded medals today in appreciation of the neighbouring country's contribution to the cause of Bangladesh's independence.
For the first time since 1971, Indian generals will join official programmes here celebrating the Independence Day.
Although a huge independence monument is being built in Suhrawardy Udyan to preserve the memories of the martyrs and glorify independence, the exact spot where the surrender document was signed will be a difficult task to locate now.
So far, there has been no step to identify the historic spot and build a memorial there, sources said.
