Mohammad Fazlul Karim, senior most judge of the Supreme Court Appellate Division, has been appointed new chief justice. President Zillur Rahman made the appointment on Thursday. Karim replaces Md Tafazzul Islam who took oath of office as the 17th chief justice on Dec 23. Islam will retire on Feb 7. Karim's appointment will be effective from Feb 8. Karim is due to go on retirement on Sept 30.

The law ministry has appointed secretaries to its two recently-formed divisions, after more than a month without any secretary at the helm due to a legal ruling on the ministry's former top bureaucrat. The Chief of General Staff of Bangladesh Army (CGS), Major General Abdul Hafiz, ndc, psc has been appointed forces commander of the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission in Ivory Coast. General Hafiz told The Independent yesterday that he had received the UN appointment letter appointing him as the forces commander of the UN peacekeeping mission in Ivory Coast. "I will join the UN peacekeeping mission in Ivory Coast by end of March next year," he said.

Kamaluddin made envoy to Iraq

The government has appointed Muhammad Kamaluddin, former Bangladesh high commissioner to Malaysia, the ambassador to Iraq to reopen the Baghdad mission after a lapse of more than six years, a foreign ministry release said Wednesday.
