No authority of EC to cancel registration, says CEC

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr ATM Shamsul Huda has said that the election commission is not authorised to cancel the registration of a political party for its involvement in religious activities or terrorism.

Long overdue DCC polls by end of May, says CEC

Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda on Wednesday said that the long overdue elections to the Dhaka City Corporation might be held at the end of May even if the court’s decision goes against the EC. He told newsmen after a meeting of the election commission, ‘We are hopeful that the elections to the Dhaka City Corporations will be held at the end of May even if the court’s verdict after the hearing on February 23 goes against us because we will have 45 days’ time between the announcement of the schedule and the polling date. Besides, the Higher Secondary School examinations will be over by that time.’

DCC election in March: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr ATM Shamsul Huda here on Sunday said, election to the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) will be held in March and the municipalities in May next year. He also said, election to the Union Parishad may be held in September-October. He, however, said no date has yet been finalized or announced but we are doing some projections in this regard.

Municipal polls by May, UPs’ by Oct: CEC

Chief election commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda Friday said the elections to the municipalities and union parishads will be completed by May and October next respectively. Elections to these local government bodies will be held next year for smooth completion of the ongoing developments works of the government and requests by the Union Parishad Chairmen Samity, he said.

Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda on Thursday said the city corporation elections will be held in March next year, municipality in April while the union parishad elections in June-July. Replying to quires while inaugurating the server station in Feni, the CEC said the Election Commission wants to complete the elections soon after the Dhaka City Corporation election.

EC to take more time on SQC

The Election Commission will take more time to decide about legal steps to strip BNP's Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury of his parliament membership, chief ATM Shamsul Huda said yesterday. "The legal aspects need to be observed more carefully," the chief election commissioner told reporters at the Jamalpur Circuit House before visiting the district election office.

Elections to municipalities and Union Parisad bodies will be held sometime after March, the chief election commissioner said Wednesday. "Before that, city corporation elections will be held at the first week of March," ATM Shamsul Huda said at a media briefing at Netrokona Circuit House. On Sept 28, Huda said they were considering holding Dhaka City Corporation elections at the end of January or early February in 2010.
