The apparel industry's top trade body Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) had more than doubled the number of fire safety teams throughout the industry, said the association President Abdus Salam Murshedy, reports bdnews24.com.

BGMEA Institute of Fashion and Technology (BIFT) will provide three months long training to the 600 unemployed youths and girls to create job opportunities in the garment industrial units of the country. The jobless-300 youths and 300 girls-will get opportunity at a time under 'Tungipara and Kutalipara projects' of human resources development of BGMEA, a release said here on Thursday.

Details of a high profile meeting between top executives of the retail giant and a delegation of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) emerged hours after the Walmart boss had left the country.
The CEO of Walmart, the company that buys over a billion dollars worth of RMG from Bangladesh annually, arrived in Dhaka Thursday evening on a short, unannounced visit and will meet, among others, the prime minister. Michael Duke, the president and chief executive officer of the US retail giant Wal-Mart, will meet Sheikh Hasina on Friday morning, BGMEA president Abdus Salam Murshedy said.
Agriculture minister Matia Chowdhury has branded the country's top apparel exporters association BGMEA as "land-grabber" and a section of its leaders as "educated criminals". "BGMEA has erected a building in the centre of Hatirjheel," she said on Tuesday, referring to what was once a major water body of the capital that is now undergoing regeneration in a major development project. "Now they are advocating protection of environment," said Matia. "Those who commit crimes but presume to advise others are nothing but educated criminals," she said.

Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan yesterday urged the garments exporters to use the Mongla Port to avoid congestion in Chittagong Port. "If the apparel exporters agree to use the Mongla Port, we will arrange a special ferry for reaching their consignments there," said Shahjahan Khan.
