Traffic system in the capital virtually collapsed yesterday due to several processions and demonstrations that forced thousands of vehicles to remain stranded for hours and inflicted untold sufferings on commuters.

Mayor Mohiuddin's daughter dies in Bangkok

Fauzia Sultana Tumpa, eldest daughter of Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, died at a hospital in Bangkok yesterday afternoon.

A 6th semester student of English Language and Literature at Premier University in the city had long been suffering from acute leukemia. She was taken to Foteh Hospital in Bangkok nearly two months ago.

Mohiuddin barred from working as Chittagong Mayor

A B M Mohiuddin Chowdhury, just released Mayor of Chittagong, has been barred from working as the mayor of the Chittagong City Corporation by a notification of the Local Government Ministry issued in Dhaka.

City, poura polls 'test case’: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner Dr ATM Shamsul Huda yesterday termed the city and poura polls as 'test case' for the Election Commission (EC) before what he said the final test of national polls.

Talking to reporters at the EC Secretariat he said he does not see any problem with holding parliamentary elections under the emergency.

Local body polls largely peaceful

The local body polls were largely peaceful until 2 pm Monday, though faulty voter lists in three polling centres in Khulna turned away many enthusiastic voters without allowing them to cast votes.

Polls in 4 city corporations today under emergency

All eyes are now on today's polls, the first ones under the military-backed caretaker government with the state of emergency in full force. With the cessation of electioneering at midnight Saturday, relaxation of the emergency powers rules (EPR) in the election areas too came to a close. This means over 13.67 lakh people in four city corporations and nine municipalities will have to cast vote under a state of emergency.
