PADMA BRIDGE TENDER INVITATION :Govt may miss deadline

The government and the lenders are at loggerheads over the tender process of the multi-purpose Padma Bridge which might make the former miss the proposed deadline in February for inviting international bidders, said officials. The communications ministry, the main implementing agency of the $2.4 billion dollar project, has prepared a single tender for both the rail and road portions of the bridge. But the Japan International Cooperation Agency, one of the four major lenders, has demanded separate tenders for the two-tier bridge with a four-lane road on the top and a broad-gauge railway track below.

Freedom Party fails to meet constitution deadline

Thirty-eight political parties have submitted their fully ratified constitutions to the Election Commission up to the Sunday (Jan 24) deadline. Election commissioner M Sakhawat Hossain, talking to reporters at the EC secretariat, said only the Freedom Party, of 39 parties registered with draft constitutions before the December 2008 general elections, had failed to place its final constitution by the deadline, risking cancellation of registration.

The deadline for filing individual income tax return has been extended, for a second time, to Nov 12, setting to rest speculations on Sunday. The National Board of Revenue in a circular confirmed the extension. The NBR extended the deadline by one month on Sep 29. As the Oct 31 deadline falls on a weekend day, Saturday, returns were to be received until 8pm on Sunday.

Not a single lower unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party could hold a council session even 35 days before the deadline because of conflict at the grassroots-level, which threatens to disrupt the restructuring move of the party and foil its plan to hold the national council session by December. The party’s standing committee on July 9 dissolved 71 of the 75 district unit committees and formed convening committees, asking them to complete the holding of council sessions by November 15.
