32.5 km Elevated Expressway :$2b project up for tender today

The Ministry of Communications is finally floating tender today for building an elevated expressway of 32.5 kilometres or more in Dhaka on a public private partnership (PPP) basis. The Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) under the ministry will receive pre-qualification documents for this $2 billion project from interested bidders till January 20.

Dhaka to seek duty free access of few products to India

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday said Bangladesh will seek duty free access of some of its specific products to Indian markets during the her upcoming visit to the neighbouring country. In this context, she directed the ministries concerned to finalise the list of those products along with preparing strategic papers to this end to further strengthen regional cooperation.

Japanese QTEC plans Dhaka wing

The Japan Textile Products Quality and Technology Centre, which is called QTEC, will open a laboratory in Dhaka in February next year for inspection of Bangladeshi goods to be exported to Japan. After China and Korea, Bangladesh will be the third country to have a QTEC laboratory, which serves importers testing products following the strict Japanese standard requirements, said a top QTEC official. ‘We will open our Dhaka laboratory on the first day of February 2010,’ Hiroshi Okada, president of Tokyo-based QTEC, told New Age on Thursday.

The Lashkar-e-Taiyeba (LeT) sent a huge amount to Mufti Harun's accounts for carrying out attack on US Embassy in Dhaka, officials interrogating three LeT leaders arrested from Chittagong said. The officials said, Pakistani national Abdur Rahman, who was detained in Pakistan this week for links with militancy, had transferred Tk 600,000 to the account of Mufti Harun's brother Faizullah for this attack.

Ruling party men allegedly vandalised and set fire to Barisal BNP office complex on the city's Aswini Kumar Hall premises yesterday protesting the bomb blast near the Awami League (AL) office in Dhaka that left four people wounded. Witnesses said a group of Jubo League and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men led by district unit Jubo League President Zakir Hossain and BCL city unit convener Ziaur Rahman swooped on the BNP office at about 6:00pm.

India appoints new envoy to Dhaka

India is replacing its high commissioner to Bangladesh Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty. The Indian government's ministry of external affairs announced on Tuesday that Chakravarty would be replaced by Rajeet Mitter currently India's ambassador to Philippines.
