Around 80,000 unfit cars are plying the streets of Dhaka city in violation of the set laws and have been causing severe traffic congestion and environmental hazards. A major earthquake of 7.5 on the Richter scale might kill about 88,000 people and demolish 72,000 buildings and damage 86,000 others in the capital city. Seven members of a family were killed in a sudden fire which broke out in a building of the Japan Garden City complex on early Friday, and the top fire officials said the ignorance and/or negligence of the developers was responsible for the tragedy. An apartment owner in the complex, Abdul Karim, told reporters, ‘More than 5,000 people here are at risk of death due to lack of simple fire-fighting gear.’
