Eighteen internet-service providers (ISPs) launched IP telephony service in Dhaka on Tuesday. This for the first time in Bangladesh a large number of companies will provide this service.

80,000 unfit cars cause traffic jam in city

Around 80,000 unfit cars are plying the streets of Dhaka city in violation of the set laws and have been causing severe traffic congestion and environmental hazards. The BRTA [Bangladesh Road Transport Authority] are running only two mobile courts led by two executive magistrates to take actions against the huge unfit transports, sources said.

Major earthquake might kill 88,000 people in capital

A major earthquake of 7.5 on the Richter scale might kill about 88,000 people and demolish 72,000 buildings and damage 86,000 others in the capital city. Such devastation in the port city of Chittagong could be more catastrophic claiming the lives of nearly 95,000 people and razing to the ground 142,000 buildings, reports BSS.

The traffic system of Dhaka city almost collapsed yesterday and the mega city commuters had to undergo intolerable sufferings because of the gridlock of vehicular traffic. Dhaka's traffic system is heading for a total collapse. If the 18 proposals for improvement of the smooth traffic system for Dhaka city are implemented, at least 72 percent of the traffic jam will be reduced, transport experts have said.

High-rise buildings in city ignore fire safety

Most of the multi-storied residential and office buildings in the country, belonging both to the government and citizens, are extremely vulnerable to fire because of the lack or inadequacy of fire-fighting equipment and safety measures. Seven members of a family were killed in a sudden fire which broke out in a building of the Japan Garden City complex on early Friday, and the top fire officials said the ignorance and/or negligence of the developers was responsible for the tragedy. An apartment owner in the complex, Abdul Karim, told reporters, ‘More than 5,000 people here are at risk of death due to lack of simple fire-fighting gear.’
