Ambitious plan launched for long-stranded 'Biharis'

Dhaka City Corporation has undertaken a massive project to construct 45 high-rise buildings at Mohammadpur to rehabilitate thousands of stranded Pakistanis who have been inhabiting squalid refugee camps for nearly four decades.

HC clears way to DCC poll schedule

The High Court on Thursday rejected all five petitions over redrawing the areas of Dhaka City Corporation and its wards and cleared the way of the Election Commission to announce the poll schedule. The court observed the tenures of the DCC mayor and the councillors expired long ago but they were still holding office. It hoped that the authorities would take steps for holding elections to the city corporation as early as possible.

River cleanup doomed to fail

A drive to clean Dhaka's polluted Buriganga River is doomed to fail due to lack of equipment and poor quality bidders, according to official sources.The Prime Minister made clean up of the troubled waterway a top priority, but environmental agencies say waste is still being dumped into the river from 42 points including Keraniganj, Babubazar, Waizghat, Badamtoli, Kamrangirchar and Jinjira.

Long overdue DCC polls by end of May, says CEC

Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda on Wednesday said that the long overdue elections to the Dhaka City Corporation might be held at the end of May even if the court’s decision goes against the EC. He told newsmen after a meeting of the election commission, ‘We are hopeful that the elections to the Dhaka City Corporations will be held at the end of May even if the court’s verdict after the hearing on February 23 goes against us because we will have 45 days’ time between the announcement of the schedule and the polling date. Besides, the Higher Secondary School examinations will be over by that time.’

Tk 16 crore allocated for mosquito control in DCC

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam informed the House today that Taka 16 crore has been allocated for mosquito control activities in Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) in 2009-10 fiscal year. Replying to a question from treasury bench member Iliyas Uddin Mollah, the minister said hyacinth and wastes which were identified as breeding places for mosquito are being cleaned up regularly.

Declaration of DCC poll schedule stayed till Feb 23

The High Court on Monday stayed till February 23 the process of declaring schedule for holding elections to Dhaka City Corporation (DCC). The court also issued a rule upon the government and Election Commission (EC) to explain by February 23 why they should not be directed to demarcate the wards of DCC on the basis on their population.

DCC polls schedule in a week, Bhola-3 by-poll by May 7

The Election Commission is likely to announce in a week the schedule for elections to the Dhaka City Corporation, which has been long overdue, said election commissioner Sakhawat Hossain. ‘The commission is expected to finalise in a week the electoral code conduct and announce the schedule for the DCC polls soon after finalisation of the regulations,’ he said. Election commissioners earlier on several occasions said the city cororation polls would be held by the end of March 2010. The Dhaka mayor and city ward commissioners served out their tenure in May 2007.
