Jaundice, also known as icterus (attributive adjective: "icteric"), is yellowish discoloration of the skin, sclerae (whites of the eyes) and mucous membranes caused by hyperbilirubinemia (increased levels of bilirubin in the blood). This hyperbilirubinemia subsequently causes increased levels of bilirubin in the extracellular fluids.
Although the city dwellers are breathing severely polluted air for long with many suffering from different diseases, the government has yet to make any visible intervention to control the pollution. The gaseous pollutants in city air decreased significantly in the wake of banning two-stroke engines half a decade ago. But now the quantity of floating dust and other smaller particles has reached an alarming level again.
