শনিবার মধ্যরাতে ঢাকাসহ দেশের বেশ কয়েকটি অঞ্চলে অনুভূত ভূমিকম্পটির উৎপত্তিস্থল ছিল ঢাকা থেকে প্রায় ১২০ কিলোমিটার দূরে ময়মনসিংহ জেলার সমেশ্বরী নদীর হালুয়া ঘাট অঞ্চল। রিখটার স্কেলে এ ভূমিকম্পনের মাত্রা ছিল ৪ দশমিক ৮। হালুয়াঘাট অঞ্চলটি ডাউকি ফল্টের সমর্থক একটি অঞ্চল। বাংলাদেশ প্রকৌশল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের পুরকৌশল বিভাগ ও ভূতত্ত্ব বিভাগ সূত্রে এ তথ্য জানা গেছে।
A earthquake measuring 5.6 magnitude on the Richter scale jolted most parts of Bangladesh early Sunday with some students from Dhaka University were injured.
According to Weather Office of the Bangladeshi government, the earthquake took place at 00:50 local time (19:50 GMT) with the center in Sylhet district, 238 km northest of capital Dhaka.
