EC asks three political parties to inform about student body

The Election Commission (EC) has asked three political parties to notify the commission about the affiliation with their respective student wings, reports BSS. The EC Thursday issued the letters to the political parties in this regard mentioning some press reports and speech of the leaders of Awami League, BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami.

Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda on Wednesday said that the long overdue elections to the Dhaka City Corporation might be held at the end of May even if the court’s decision goes against the EC. He told newsmen after a meeting of the election commission, ‘We are hopeful that the elections to the Dhaka City Corporations will be held at the end of May even if the court’s verdict after the hearing on February 23 goes against us because we will have 45 days’ time between the announcement of the schedule and the polling date. Besides, the Higher Secondary School examinations will be over by that time.’

EC to help Nepal make flawless voters’ roll

The Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh will help strengthen that in Nepal to prepare a faultless voters' roll. The decision came following a formal request by the Himalayan state through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). As part of its effort, the EC has decided to gift 120 webcams and 120 finger print scanners to the Nepalese EC.

Rule issued on citizens' involvement in specific DCC wards

DCC poll by Mar 25, Schedule within February 20

The election to the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) will be held sometime between March 18 and March 25 this year, sources in the Election Commission (EC) said yesterday. The commission will announce the poll schedule by February 20, the sources added. According to the draft poll schedule, the aspirants will have to submit their nomination papers to the commission during the period between February 22 and February 25 while scrutiny of nomination papers will be held between February 28 and March 2. The candidates will have to withdraw their candidature from March 4 to March 8, the sources said.

The Election Commission yesterday published a gazette notification vacating Awami League lawmaker from Bhola-3 Major (retd) Jasim Uddin's membership in parliament. The EC published the gazette over three and half a months after the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court declared Jasim's candidacy in the ninth parliamentary election illegal.
