EC asks AL, two other parties to further amend constitutions

The Election Commission on Thursday wrote to three political parties, including the ruling Awami League, asking for further amendments to their respective constitutions which, it said, had provisions in conflict with the Representation of the People Order. The two other political parties which have been asked to amend their constitutions in line with the RPO provisions are Liberal Democratic Party and Jatiya Party (JP-Manju).

EC likely to go after 14 MPs

The Election Commission (EC) is likely to go for legal steps against 14 MPs including 11 from ruling Awami League for concealing information regarding payment of income tax during nomination paper submission with the EC for the 9th parliamentary election. Some 10 lawmakers out of 14 have mentioned in the nomination paper's specific column for tax related information that the column is not applicable for them as they do not pay tax. The rest 4 MPs did not write anything in that specific column.

EC rejects BNP allegation on RPO

Election commissioner Sohul Hossain on Wednesday said the second amendment to the Representation of People Order was brought to bring BNP under the purview of registration. BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain on Tuesday alleged that the provision for cancellation of registration was meant to keep BNP out of registration. He termed the second amendment motivated and conspiratorial.

Parties get until Jan 24 to submit constitutions to EC

Political parties will have to submit their ratified constitutions by January 24, 2010 to the Election Commission to get registered as the Jatiya Sangsad Monday passed the Representation of the People Order (Second Amendment) Bill 2009. The House approved the bill by voice vote rejecting an amendment proposal moved by an independent lawmaker to extend the time for six months. Law, justice and parliamentary affairs minister Shafique Ahmed sought passage of the bill after a brief discussion.

EC delays action as parties miss deadline

The Election Commission (EC) has finally decided to exempt 39 political parties from submitting to it within the timeframe, audit reports on their financial transactions in the immediate past year, without amending the legal provision in this regard.
