New laws will avoid poll-rigging complaints: Sakhawat

Laws are being framed to avoid 'false' allegations of poll rigging by defeated parties after elections, an election commissioner said on Monday. Since 1991, four parliamentary governments have come to power after elections, but the defeated party has always raised allegations of election rigging while the winning party maintained the election was free and fair.

Municipal polls by May, UPs’ by Oct: CEC

Chief election commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda Friday said the elections to the municipalities and union parishads will be completed by May and October next respectively. Elections to these local government bodies will be held next year for smooth completion of the ongoing developments works of the government and requests by the Union Parishad Chairmen Samity, he said.

Municipal, UP polls in March: CEC

Elections to municipalities and Union Parisad bodies will be held sometime after March, the chief election commissioner said Wednesday. "Before that, city corporation elections will be held at the first week of March," ATM Shamsul Huda said at a media briefing at Netrokona Circuit House. On Sept 28, Huda said they were considering holding Dhaka City Corporation elections at the end of January or early February in 2010.

Municipal polls in Feb or Mar, says Shakhawat

Elections to municipalities will be held in February or March in the next year. Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) M Shakhawat Hossain disclosed this to the news agency yesterday. He thanked the government for the passage of 'Local Government (Municipality) Act-2009' and said the new law has paved the way for elections to the municipalities.

BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain today said people’s verdict was not reflected in the December 29 parliamentary polls as well as the January 22 upazila parisad elections.

Makers of percussion instruments in Mymensingh town and in the suburbs report brisk business as the demand for instruments in the election rallies has gathered momentum.

The instruments include tenor drum (boom), side drum (corha), jhunjhuni, kortal and gipsy. In fact so popular are these that local bands as well as those from Sherpur and Jamalpur are rushing to Mymensingh to buy new instruments.
