The government plans to go for legal battle with the Supreme Court to rescind the High Court verdict that acquitted six former military personnel of the killing of four national leaders in jail on November 3, 1975.

Govt to withdraw 293 more political cases mostly against AL men

The government on Thursday decided to withdraw 293 more ‘politically-motivated cases’ mostly against members of the ruling Awami League. The decision came at the ninth meeting of the national review committee on withdrawal of politically-motivated cases at the home affairs ministry with state minister for law Quamrul Islam in the chair. The meeting did not recommend withdrawal of any such cases against leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led alliance.

Govt yet to implement anti-begging law

The government recently took approval of the parliament on an anti-begging law with the commitment to uproot the phenomenon of begging in the city streets within five years. The law says anyone who asks for charity in public, or displays handicaps or mutilations in order to obtain money, will be punished with three months in prison.

Future trial of BDR under army act

The government is planning to issue a gazette notification stating that any future mutiny and other offences in paramilitary Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) will be tried under the army act. Home Secretary Abdus Sobhan Sikder confirmed The Daily Star that the matter has been under the government's consideration.

New times for offices from Sunday, schools Nov 1

The new work hours for government, semi-government, autonomous and private banks, financial corporations or institutions to control chaos on the streets of the capital will be enforced from Sunday (Oct 18). PM for stopping use of children in politics

"Children would be aware of politics but should not be used in the political activities," the prime minister said while inaugurating a programme on the occasion of World Children's Day and Child Rights Week 2009.
