The High Court on Wednesday began hearing the rule issued earlier asking the government to explain why the certificate of the Office of the Registrar of the Joint Stock Companies and Firms allowing charitable organisation BRAC to buy shares of any company involved in business of profit would not be declared illegal.

A Dhaka court on Tuesday fixed March 11 for hearing on charge framing against detained former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar in a tax evasion case.

Tinni murder case resurfaces after 8 years

The case of the 2002 murder of model Tinni has resurfaced after a gap of eight years, as a Dhaka court set a hearing date on Monday. Court official Kamal Kumar Paul told bdnews24.com that Dhaka district and sessions judge Krishna Devnath fixed Mar 14 for a hearing on whether the court would accept the case against former MP and 'student leader' Golam Faruk Ovi, who is now absconding.

Hearing on Khaleda's cantt house case deferred

The High Court on Monday deferred for two weeks the hearing on a case filed regarding BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's cantonment house. The HC was due to hold the hearing on a writ petition filed by Khaleda challenging a government notice that had asked her to leave the cantonment house.

SC rules on Jamuna Park demolition appeal Thursday

The Supreme Court Appellate Division has fixed Thursday to give a ruling on an appeal by Jamuna Builders challenging a previous High Court order for demolition of the illegal stories of the company's Future Park development in the city. A full Appellate Division bench headed by chief justice Fazlul Karim fixed the date after a hearing Wednesday.

BDR trial begins in Thakurgaon

The trial of BDR mutiny at 20 Rifle Battalion under Dinajpur sector began at the Thakurgaon Battalion Headquarters on Wednesday. The three-member panel of Special Court-2 headed by BDR Director General Maj Gen M Mainul Islam started hearing against 25 members of the battalion at about 11:00am. The two other members of the committee are Lt Col Gazi Khalid Hossain and Major Lutful Karim.

'Parliament can't suspend the constitution'

The Supreme Court has set Tuesday for an order on two petitions against the repeal of the Fifth Amendment. A full six-member bench, led by chief justice Tafazzul Islam, set the date on Monday after six days of hearings on the petitions that began on Jan 19. BNP secretary general Delwar Hossain and three pro-Jamaat-e-Islami Supreme Court lawyers—Munshi Ahsan Kabir, Tajul Islam and Kamruzzaman Bhuiyan—filed the two petitions seeking a stay on the 2005 High Court judgment that declared the Fifth Amendment illegal.
