Residents of Dhaka yesterday have been passing a busy day to carry out their last minute shopping to celebrate Pahela Baishakh, first day of Bangla New Year in a festive mood.

Eid-ul-Azha cattle markets in the city formally opened to the buyers yesterday amid sparse supply of cattle due to heightened watch on the cross border movements in the wake of terror attacks in Mumbai.
A city cattle market appears to be dull this year unlike previous occasions.
The prices of the essential items including rice, soybean oil and lentil continue to maintain a high trend in different kitchen markets of the city. Onion and most of the vegetable prices have also increased Tk 4 to Tk 5 per kg yesterday.
Skyrocketing prices of essential items have put a financial burden on the limited budget of lower and middle-income group of people.
