Prof Dr Muzaffar Ahmed, Chairman, TIB yesterday said middlemen's control in the market should be reduced for supply of agricultural products to the consumers at a rational price.

State-owned Janata Bank plans to raise Tk 100 crore from capital market through initial public offering (IPO) next year in a bid to strengthen its capital base.

A senior official of the bank on condition of anonymity said they expect to go for the IPO by June next year after finalising the bank's financial statement by March.

দেশিটা বাড়ছে আর বিদেশিটা বাড়ছে না অন্য কারণে। গ্লোবাল সিচুয়েশন ভাল নয় তাই বিদেশ থেকে বেশি বিনিয়োগের আশা করাও ঠিক হবে না। তাছাড়া বিদেশিরাও দেশে একটি নির্বাচিত সরকার আশা করে। অনির্বাচিত সরকারের ব্যাপারে তারা উৎসাহী নয়, বরং সে ব্যাপারে তারা ইতস্তত বোধ করে। আর একটি ব্যাপার হলো এখনও দেশের ব্যবসায়ীদের ভয়-ভীতিটা রয়েই গেছে। কেন জানি ব্যবসায়ীদের সেই ভীতিটা কাটছে না। অবশ্য ট্রুথ কমিশন ভালভাবে কাজ করলে হয়তো স্বাভাবিক অবস্থা ফিরে আসতে পারে।

The global financial turmoil is likely to weigh on remittance inflows and exports, the two vital areas that provide a lifeline to the Bangladesh economy, said analysts yesterday.

It means that the country may tilt its Balance of Payments (BoP) as the bulk of its local demand for commodities such as fuel is met by imports.
