আমেরিকার সংবাদপত্রের অবস্থা মোটেই ভালো নয়। প্রায় সব বড় পত্রিকার প্রচারসংখ্যাই কমে আসছে। বিজ্ঞাপন থেকে আয় কমে আসছে, ফলে সাংবাদিকদের দেদার ছাঁটাই চলছে। অধিকাংশ পত্রিকাই বিদেশে তাদের স্থায়ী সাংবাদিক প্রতিনিধি এখন আর রাখতে পারছে না, নয়তো তাঁদের সংখ্যা কমিয়ে দিচ্ছে। এমনকি পত্রিকার পাতার সংখ্যাও কমে আসছে, ফলে পরিবেশিত খবরের পরিমাণ ও গুণাগুণ কমতে শুরু করেছে।
সংবাদপত্রের প্রতিবেদন অনুযায়ী সম্প্রতি ‘সংবাদমাধ্যম স্বাধীনতা রক্ষা কমিটি’ নামে একটি সংগঠন আত্মপ্রকাশ করেছে। বেশ কয়েকজন সম্পাদক ও সাংবাদিক প্রতিনিধি নিয়ে গঠিত কমিটির উদ্দেশ্য হলো সংবাদমাধ্যমের স্বাধীনতা ও স্বার্থ রক্ষা করা। নিঃসন্দেহে এটি একটি প্রশংসনীয় উদ্যোগ।
সম্প্রতি বাংলাদেশ প্রেস কাউন্সিলের উদ্যোগে একটি চমৎকার সেমিনার অনুষ্ঠিত হয়েছে। সেমিনারে আলোচ্য বিষয় ছিল: ‘প্রেস কাউন্সিলকে অধিকতর কার্যকর করার ক্ষেত্রে প্রেস কাউন্সিল অ্যাক্ট ১৯৭৪ সংশোধন কি অপরিহার্য?’ বিষয় দেখে মনেই হয় না এ সেমিনার কোনো সরকারি প্রতিষ্ঠান আয়োজন করেছে। রাজধানীর অন্য দশটা সেমিনারের চেয়ে এ সেমিনার ব্যতিক্রম ছিল।
