Mass Upsurge Day today

The historic Mass Upsurge Day will be observed today to commemorate the valiant sons of the soil who sacrificed their lives in the 1969 student-people uprising that culminated in the independence of Bangladesh in 1971. This day in 1969, students and people waged a vigorous movement against the then Pakistani autocratic regime of Ayub Khan.

Saraswati Puja observed

The Sri Sri Saraswati Puja was observed across the country yesterady with prayers and festivity at temples, educational institutions and homes of the country. The devotee of Hindu Community assembled the Puja Mandaps and sought blessings from the goddess of knowledge for better education. The celebration also included offering of Devi Aradhona, Puspoanjoli, 'archanas', 'anjolis', aratis', distribution of 'Prashad', 'Arati Competitions', cultural functions and staging of dramas, the sources said.

Feb 25 to be observed as Pilkhana Killing Day

The government decided that February 25 will be observed as Pilkhana Killing Day to commemorate the victims massacred inside the BDR headquarters during a terrible mutiny by the lower orders of the border force this day last year.

BCL observes 62nd founding anniversary

Shaheed Noor Hossain Day was observed across the country on Tuesday with major political parties taking fresh vows to consolidate democracy and ensure the people’s fundamental rights. On this day in 1987 Noor Hossain, a young pro-democracy campaigner, was killed in police firing near Zero Point in Dhaka during demonstrations against the autocratic regime of HM Ershad. With the slogan ‘Down with dictatorship’ inscribed in white paint on his chest and ‘Let democracy be freed’ on his back, the youth took the centre stage of that day’s street agitation until he was callously shot dead.

DU black day observed: Fresh probe into August unrest demanded

Dhaka University teachers and students have become sharply divided over observance of 'black day' marking August 20-22 incident in 2007. Students claimed that the teachers are observing the day ignoring their demand as the incident took place between students and Army on August 20, which should be treated as 'black day.'
