Police launches fresh raid at RU hall

Police launched a fresh raid at Mother Bux hall of Rajshahi University early Saturday a day after they arrested a hall employee. But none was arrested or nothing was recovered during the raid, reports our Rajshahi University correspondent. On information, police arrested Akbar Hossain, a dinning staff of the hall and also an activist of Islami Chattra Shibir, on Friday night for his alleged involvement in storing firearms at the hall for his party.

'Half a million arrests' in 10 months

Police and Rapid Action Battalion made 500,787 arrests around the country over the last 10 months, a report of police headquarters said Sunday. The report, handed to the home ministry, says law enforcers had arrest warrants for 338,619 persons, among which 5,053 were convicted criminals. They arrested 158,942 others without warrants.

Up to 3,000 sued for Tongi violence

Police on Sunday filed a case against 2,000 to 3,000 unidentified people in connection with Saturday’s violent clash between police and workers in Tongi that left two people dead and 100 others injured.

Cohorts of Mujib killers behind attack on Tapash, police believe

The police are convinced that the associates of the killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had carried out the bomb attack on Awami League lawmaker Fazle Noor Tapash on October 21. "We kept open all avenues but as per our investigation so far, we are convinced that the associates and relatives of the Bangabandhu killers carried out the attack,' said deputy commissioner of detective branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Monirul Islam.

Police launch probe into murder of 2 BDR soldiers

The police on Saturday launched investigations into the murder of two soldiers of the Bangladesh Rifles in custody in March and May. Earlier on Friday night, the police filed two murder cases with the New Market police station in connection with the deaths of the two BDR soldiers, lance nayek Mobarak Hossain and havilder Mahiuddin.

50 RMG workers injured as they clash with cops

At least 50 ready-made garment workers, including eight policemen, were injured in a clash between the workers and police in Savar on the outskirts of the capital today. Police said the employees of Unlima Group have been protesting since last Saturday to reinstate their four fellow-workers, who were fired before Eid vacation.

Police raid 'house of wife' of ETV's Salam

Police raided the Mohakhali house of private TV station ETV chairman Abdus Salam's wife early on Saturday after his company filed a case charging her with illegal possession of its three vehicles and papers. Armed with a search warrant that a court issued on Oct 1, police raided Farzana Shilpi's house-336 at Road-23 of DOHS in the wee hours. Salam also went there with his men and lawyer.
