Tele Barta Limited, a private nationwide PSTN operator having a subscriber base of 56,000 in the whole country, started its operation in 2006. It has a countrywide network through PSTN Microwave Backbone and sophisticated PSTN Technology of world-renowned companies like Siemens and Motorola.

Illegal use of PCO by mobile operators blamed

Private landline operators complain of damage to their business, as the telecom regulator is not taking any step against the use of PCO (public call office) by mobile phone operators that are not entitled to such facility.

The country's telecom regulator yesterday said it decided to issue IP (internet protocol) telephony licences to three local internet service providers by October. In a meeting with Internet Service Provider Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB), the telecom watchdog also said it already formulated a draft policy to introduce the internet-based telephony that uses the internet protocol's packet-switched connections to exchange voice.
