At least 8 lakh motorized vehicles and 5-lakh- pedal-rickshaws ply in the city everyday ahead of the Eid and causing traffic situation deteriorated in the capital.

With the sale of various conventional iftar items, the seasonal street vendors and wayside restaurants yesterday made a brisk business on the first day of the holy month of fasting.
The holy month of Ramadan would start on Sunday as the moon was not sighted today, confirmed the National Moon Sighting Committee. The announcement came following a meeting of the committee to ascertain the sighting of the Ramadan moon at the Islamic Foundation.
Many of the dealers assigned by the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) for selling essentials during Ramadan belong to the ruling Awami League. TCB Chairman Joynal Abedin however declined to comment on the matter.
Commerce Minister Faruk Khan today said the government would reduce duty on import of some basic commodities to stabilise the market during Ramadan.
The government will ask industries such as steel, re-rolling and textile mills around the capital and in Chittagong to stop their operation during evening peak hours in Ramadan to save on gas and electricity to reduce power outages.
