Strengthening of local government indeed for grassroots development

Speakers at a discussion here yesterday unequivocally called for strengthening the local government institutions for overall development of the nation. In this context, they also viewed that substantial development of the ancient local government bodies is vital for institutionalization of democracy.

No initiatives to reactivate AL at grassroots

The organisational activities of the ruling Awami League remain almost stagnant although the party president, Sheikh Hasina, also the prime minister, has repeatedly called for strengthening the party at the grassroots level. At the AL central executive committee meeting on October 3, Hasina instructed the newly elected leaders to put in all their efforts to strengthen the party organisationally at the grassroots level to translate into reality its ‘charter for change’.

US Congressman Patrick Kennedy assured his total support for congressional measures to ease tariff and debt burden on Bangladesh through strengthening the lobbying in the American parliament.
