UK tightens visa rules for foreign students

Bangladeshis along with other foreign students wanting to study in the UK will be required to meet stricter entry criteria, the UK government British home secretary Alan Johnson announced Wednesday. The new regulations will ensure that students studying below degree level have a limited ability to work in the UK, and that their dependants cannot work in Britain at all. It will be even harder for bogus students, whose only aim is to work in the UK, to come into the country, the British government has said.

President urges private unis to serve insolvent students

President Md Zillur Rahman on Sunday urged private universities to offer higher education to students from insolvent rural families. He made the call while addressing the convocation ceremony of Brac University at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka.

Violence at trade fair: 50 hurt

Students of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University at Agargaon in Dhaka vandalised 62 cars on Friday after they clashed with the police over entry to Dhaka International Trade Fair. The university's proctor, students and policemen were among at least 50 injured. The police said they had to use rubber bullets and tear gas shells to bring the situation under control when violence broke out in the evening.

50 injured as police, students clash in Rajshahi

Over 50 persons were injured as police charged batons and lobbed teargas shells on the students at Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology, who were protesting an attack by transport workers.

RAB, students clash in city

Two members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-2) were locked in clash with the students of Sher-e-Bangla University in the city yesterday. The RAB members threatened the students with gun for which the students staged a demonstration on the Rokeya Swarani for an hour. The situation was brought under control after the interference of University and RAB senior officials.

Violence in Rajshahi Edn Institutions :31 killed since '71

At least 31 people, including 28 students, were killed and over 2,500 injured in some 61 incidents of violence at different educational institutions in Rajshahi since the country's independence. Justice has hardly been meted out in any of the cases and in most cases the perpetrators got away with the crimes by exerting their political clout.

Indefinite strike at RU as BCL men assault teacher

Students at Rajshahi University on Wednesday called for an indefinite strike on the campus in protest at the assault on a teacher of the university by activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of the ruling Awami League. Campus sources said BCL activists assaulted a teacher of folklore department as he protested at extortion of money from a first year admission seeker by a BCL activist at the university.

Govt moves to withdraw case against 7 DU students

The government on Tuesday appealed to a court to withdraw a case against seven student of Dhaka University who were sued in line with the campus unrest in August 2007. Public Prosecutor Advocate Abdullah Abu filed the petition with the First Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrates' Court, Dhaka.
