Govt to restore spirit of ‘72 constitution: Shafique

Law Minister Shafique Ahmed on Monday said the government would take steps to restore the spirit of original constitution of 1972 after getting copy of the Supreme Court judgment over the fifth amendment to the constitution.

Recruitment of 15 judges this week

The government is going to appoint around 15 new judges to the High Court division of the Supreme Court within this week. Sources said these judges would be appointed as part of the government's plan to appoint a total of 50 more judges to the HC to deal with a huge backlog of pending cases.

SC stays verdict on warrant of precedence

The Supreme Court on Monday stayed for six weeks a High Court verdict that declared illegal and void the existing Warrant of Precedence. The HC on February 4 directed the government to issue a new Warrant of Precedence for the republic's officers, giving district judges and equivalent judicial officers precedence over the chiefs of armed forces and government secretaries.

SC judges should make their wealth statements public

Judges of the Supreme Court divisions should publish their wealth statements in the interest of a transparent judiciary, chief justice-designate Mohammad Fazlul Karim yesterday said. "The judges in India place their wealth statements in annual court reports, and I feel that the judges in our country too should do that for transparency," he said. Justice Karim was talking to reporters at his SC office yesterday afternoon.

SC asks 14 sugar traders to surrender before trial court

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Tuesday asked 14 sugar traders to surrender before the trial court within four weeks in two cases filed against them on charge of hoarding huge quantity of sugar last year. Passing the order, a four-member Appellate bench, headed by Chief Justice M Tafazzul Islam, however, directed the law enforcers not to harass or arrest the alleged unscrupulous sugar traders in the meantime.
