3 Bangladeshis hurt in BSF firing in Sylhet

India’s Border Security Force shot at three Bangladeshis, including a woman, in the Jaintapur frontier in Sylhet on Sunday. The Bangladesh Rifles and the Border Security Force traded several hundred gunshots along the Bibir Haor and Shreepur borders at Jaintapur between 2:00am and 4:00pm, sources said.

18 Jamaat-Shibir men detained in Sylhet

Police detained at least 18 Jamaat-Shibir men from a demonstration in Sylhet on Friday. Activists of fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir brought out a demonstration at around 2.00 pm from court point protesting against murders of Shibir members Shahin in Chapainawabganj and Chittagong University student Mahiuddin, and arrest of Rajshahi Jamaat amir Ataur Rahman.

Govt working to set up EPZ in Sylhet

Industries Minister Dilip Barua said the government is working hard to set up an export processing zone (EPZ) as well as a special economic zone (SEZ) in Sylhet considering its industrial potentiality, reports UNB. The Minister said this while addressing a reception accorded to him by BSCIC authorities on the city’s outskirts Khadimnagar on Saturday.

2.5 lakh buildings in three cities at earthquake risk

Around 250,000 buildings in the three major cities of Bangladesh—Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet—are extremely vulnerable to earthquakes, according to a recent survey. Some 142,000 among 180,000 buildings in Chittagong; 24,000 out of 52,000 in Sylhet; and 78,000 out of 326,000 buildings in Dhaka were detected as risky.
