Errant sand lifters face villagers' wrath

The villagers have driven away illegal sand lifters from 10 villages under Savar and South Keraniganj police stations today as continuous removal of silt from the river Bonshai put many houses at the risk of being washed away. Several hundreds villagers barricaded Savar-Keraniganh road at Itabhara Bridge for over three hours from 1:30pm in protest against sand lifting.

Setting a laudable example, villagers repaired the breached embankment at Khalshibunia point in Gabura union under Shyamnagar upazila on the River Kabodak through voluntary service after the Water Development Board failed to do the task.

The villagers voluntarily repaired about one km long flood protection embankment across the river Teesta at Nilarpar under Mornea union in Gangachara upazila. About three thousand villagers from seven villages under Mornea union worked all day long on Monday and repaired the embankment with sand bags on either edge.
