Film inspired by micro-credit Pallab Bhattacharya, New Delhi
Nobel Laureate Dr. Mumhammad Yunus has not only brought millions out of the quagmire of poverty in Bangladesh but also inspired a feature film screened in the Indian Panorama section of International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.
The film "Summer 2007," directed by debutant Suhail Tatari and produced by Atul Pandey, is inspired by the work on micro credit by Dr. Yunus, which helped firming up the story of the movie, Pandey told The Hindu newspaper.
Starring Sikander Kher (son of noted actor-couple Anupam Kher and Kiron Kher), Ashutosh Rana, Sachin Khedekar and Gul Panag, "Summer 2007" is the story of modern day Indian youths' indifference to the world outside that of their own in metropolitan cities, says Pandey.
The film touches on the agrarian crisis in Vidarbha in the western state of Maharashtra where recurrent drought and consequent crop failure have forced many farmers to suicide.
Pandey said The Hindu's extensive coverage of farmers' plight also inspired "Summer 2007" at its scripting stage.
Tatari is a known figure in Indian television circuit, having made a number of documentaries, but "Summer 2007" is his first big screen project.
