Nazrul's birth anniversary to be observed on May 25

The 110th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam will be observed in the country on May 25 in a befitting manner. The government and different socio-cultural organizations have chalked out elaborate programmes on the occasion.

The Ministry of Cultural Affairs has drawn up a programme to place wreaths at the mazar of the poet at 6.30 am.

President M Zillur Rahman will inaugurate the national level programmes of the day at Osmani Smriti Auditorium at 11 am. Noted academician and former Vice Chancellor Professor Zillur Rahman Siddiqui will deliver memorial speech on the poet. A cultural programme will be arranged at the second part of the function.

Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar will broadcast the function live. Private TV and radio stations will also air the function. The cultural ministry will publish a souvenir making the birth anniversary of Nazrul.

In the evening, a cultural programme will be held on the life and works of Nazrul at Jatiya Natyashala of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in which noted artistes will perform dance and render Nazrul songs and recite poems of Nazrul. As part of the national programme, the Nazrul Institute will arrange a discussion at Sufia Kamal Auditorium of National Museum at 4 pm on May 26.

The Nazrul Institute has chalked out a six-day programme to observe the birth anniversary of the National Poet.

The programme would begin on May 22 with recitation competition for children and juveniles in the institute's auditorium.

Music and drawing competitions for children and juveniles will be held in the institute's auditorium on May 23 and 24. A weeklong book fair and exhibition will be arranged at the Public Library at Shahbagh in the city.

On the concluding day on May 27, a discussion meeting on Nazrul, prize-giving ceremony and cultural function will be held in the Shaheed Zia Auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum.

As part of the national programme, the Nazrul Institute will arrange a discussion in the auditorium of National Museum at 5 pm on May 27. Chairman of the Trustee Board of the institute Professor Rafiqul Islam will preside over the meeting while noted Nazrul Researcher Professor Mustafa-Nur-Ul Islam will be present as the chief guest.

Marking the birth anniversary of Nazrul Islam, similar programmes will be arranged at Darirampur of Trishal in Mymensingh, Doulatpur in Comilla and Chittagong.

District administrations will also arrange programmes in which Nazrul researchers, artistes, litterateurs and members of civil society will take part. Bangladesh missions abroad will also observe the day in befitting manner.
