Shamsur Rahman: Impression of effortless eloquence

Shamsur Rahman (October 24, 1929-August 17, 2006) was a leading poet, columnist and journalist of his time. Rahman published over 60 books of poetry. Major themes in his poetry and writings include humanism, relationships, romanticised rebellion of youth, the emergence of and consequent events in Bangladesh, and opposition to religious fundamentalism. Today marks the 80th birth anniversary of the poet.

Herta Müller wins Nobel literature prize

German author Herta Mueller won the 2009 Nobel Literature Prize on Thursday for her work inspired by her life under Nicolae Ceausescu's dictatorship in Romania. The Nobel jury hailed Mueller, 56, as a writer who "with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the dispossessed."

US duo and Israeli win Nobel Chemistry Prize

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan and Thomas Steitz of the United States and Ada Yonath of Israel won the Nobel Chemistry Prize on Wednesday for work on the ribosome, a cellular machine that makes proteins, the stuff of life. The ribosome ‘reads’ DNA and translates the code to make the body’s tens of thousands of different proteins, thus building and controlling life at the chemical level.

Prisoners of ropes

Big sacks containing coils of rope pile up on the floors of four rope factories under the Buriganga Bridge in Aganagar in Keraniganj as 40 children toil away all day long every day. Since daybreak the children aged between five and twelve work hard for at least 12 hours, featuring one of the worst forms of child labour with exposure to various health hazards.

Special bus service for schools

The government is going to introduce exclusive bus services for school children by late October as part of its efforts to ease traffic jams in the capital. The Dhaka Transport Coordination Board (DTCB) has already reached an agreement with Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation and private bus operators to run 100 buses on major city streets of the capital for school children from 7am to 10am.
