The Buddhist community in Bangladesh celebrated Buddha Purnima like elsewhere in the world on Saturday through peace procession, prayers and distributing offerings.

The day marks the birthday of Gautam Buddha, founder of Buddhism, his attainment of perfect knowledge and Maha Nirvana. The International Bouddha Bihar brought out a peace procession at around 8am. Other programmes include voluntary blood donation, discussions and cultural function.
President Zillur Rahman, prime minister Sheikh Hasina and opposition leader Khaleda Zia greeted the Buddhist community on the occasion.
The president arranged a reception in the honour of the Buddhists at the Bangabhaban at around 5pm.
