There is no college dorm, where do they live?

Chonda just came to Dhaka. She got admitted in some college. She could not get into a public university, so eventually she got involved in an ordinary college for higher degrees. And then get introduced to few problems. Residing is one of them.

Nowadays there are numerous public-private universities in Dhaka. Some are till higher secondary level and in some complete touch of university is existent. As these colleges are renowned many students from rural areas flock here. But they face reality in this congestion. Girls face more hassle with residing. Although these organizations have other good facilities they lack a dorm to live in. Some has dorm for boys but not for girls.

And that’s when they fall in trouble. Then dreams start becoming dim. ‘I have come through a lot to get admitted in Tejgaon College, education level is really good but since we don’t have own dorm we have to roam around from door to door. On the other hand father is not wealthy enough so that we can rent a place. And condition of residential hostels is ridiculous: now I don’t know what is next’. That’s how one first year honors student expressed her opinion.

This reality comes out in most students’ expression arriving to Dhaka for studying. A survey revealed that there are few hundreds renown colleges in Dhaka. Some of these are public some are private. Most of them do not have any girls’ dormitory; while thousands of students get admitted every year. A student of Government Bangla College said, our administrators should consider this distinctively. Where slogans are made about male-female equal rights, then why there is boys’ dorm but not girls’ dorm.

Good number of colleges including Dhaka City College, Tejgaon College and Government Bangla College do not have their own girls’ dormitory. ‘Public universities do have their own boys’ or girls hostel. Then why university colleges would have this facility. It is not that they are charging less’ said one guardian.

These college girls choose isolated residential hostels. But there residential business is run. Five or more girls have to live crammed in one room. ‘As we live in residential hostels many guardians point their fingers, it makes us feel belittled. Even when father, brother sometimes visit, different comments are passed from surroundings. Then there is no choice but to shut our mouth and bear it’ said one student living in hostel.

Brilliant girls from distant areas of the country come to Dhaka to study. They will become something big, with this combative attitude joins in different thoughts from realm. Is it so hard to give them a natural student life?
