Rare Rathindranath letters uncared for

The rare letters of Rathindranath Tagore and his spouse have been found at Potisar area in Atrai upazila of Naogoan district recently along with Nobel Laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore's memorabilia like chairs, mirrors and cupboards.

Rathindranath, son of poet Rabindranath Tagore, wrote the letters in Bengali to the estate manager Birendranath Sarvadhikary at Potisar in Atrai. Most of the letters were sent to the estate through the postal department from Uttarayan Rajpur of Shantiniketan in 1954. A rare letter of Protima Devi, wife of Rathindranath, was sent to the same employee of the estate with a request to send Taka 2,000 for the marriage ceremony of one Azin's son as loan.

Local school teacher Tapon Kumar said that the 11 letters of Rathindranath and his wife had not been preserved. As a result some of the letters had become moth-eaten.

Poet Rabindranath enthusiast Matiur Rahman, collected some memorabilia like a teapot, two mirrors and a cupboard along with other artifacts with the help of local people and government officials recently. Earlier too, he collected several Rabindranath memorabilia.

Most of the locals are of the opinion that if Potisar Kacharibari is converted to an archaeological museum, all the documents can be preserved along with the other Rabindranath Tagore memorabilia.

Rabindranath Tagore visited Potisar for the last time in 1937 by boat along with his associates. His son Rathindranath died in 1961. Six years later, in 1969 Protima Devi passed away.
