Poor people start moving to cities in search of work and livelihood

The poor people have started moving to different metropolitan cities including the capital Dhaka and towns in search of work and livelihood.

Especially during the monsoon the day labourers living in different places of the country have to face serious job crisis as they don't get any kind of jobs in their respective places. On the other hand, abnormal prices of essential commodities have destroyed hopes and aspirations breaking the financial backbones of the people, specially the poor and the destitute.
Many of them are passing inhuman lives with their family members in their villages. Even, they are failing to feed their children two times in a day. The city's bus and launch terminals are regularly witnessing huge rush of poor and destitute.

"We want to do work. No master of land during this time provides us work in their land as day labour. As a result it is very difficult for us to sustain without food and other support. So we have come to Dhaka in search of work and livelihood. If we get work for only a single day, we will have to wait for a week idly. How and in what way will we continue to survive with our family members," Hassan Sheikh, day labour, hailing from Jamalpur, told this correspondent in the city's Farm-gate area on Tuesday.

He said that he was working at a construction firm as a helper and earned taka 180 per day. "But with this very little money, I have to bear my living cost in a city Dhaka. It is very tough for me to send money to my family. That is why many such poor people are streaming to cities and towns in search of work and livelihood," he added.

Masud Islam, 27, a rickshawpuller hailing from Nilphamari, said there is no work in the district for us. "We usually work as day labourers in our master's land in cultivating or planting saplings. But especially during this season, there is no work relating to cultivation in our district. moreover there is no industry set up here," he added.

On the other hand, following the on rush of huge needy and poor people from different places of the country, the day labourers are not getting job in the capital also. If they want to pull rickshaw, they are being provide rickshaw by the rickshaw owners. At least three day labourers by rotation, are driving rickshaw in the city.

"Like us as many people are coming to Dhaka, it is impossible for the rickshaw owners to provide rickshaw to the day labourers. Besides, the rickshaw owners don't want to lease out their rickshaws to unknown persons. So where can we go for work. For the last few days, I along with my some relatives are walking around different city streets in search of work and now we are sitting in front of the New Market for work," a group of day labourers told this correspondent.
