AL sends letter seeking meeting with CA

Awami League: Discussion with the political parties: August 20, 2008

Awami League has urged the Emergency Government to fix up the date of elections through discussing with the political parties to avert any dire consequences.

"If the incumbent government wants to take a one-sided decision regarding the polls-schedule to Jatiya Sangsad and Upazila Parshad, it would not obviously bring good for the country and its people," cautioned AL leaders while addressing a discussion on August 15 in the capital on Tuesday afternoon.
Acting AL President Zillur Rahman urged the government to settle the prevailing issues including general elections, withdrawal of Emergency Rule and UZ polls after the discussion with the Awami League and restore the democracy in Bangladesh.

"The move of the Election Commission to holding Upaz-aila Parishad polls before those of national would push the country towards confrontation and might create uncertainty in the Parliamentary polls," acting AL General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam apprehended proposing the authorities concerned to finalise the date of next elections.

"We want to cooperate with the interim government so that free, fair and credible general polls are ensured across the country in a congenial atmosphere. We would like to discuss the issues including, Upazila polls, reshuffle in the administration, level-playing field for elections," he said adding, "As part of these efforts, AL formally sent a letter to the Chief Adviser's office yesterday seeking a suitable time for the dialogue with the representatives of the government."

According AL sources, a four-member AL delegation led by Advocate Abdul Mannan Khan submitted an application signed by acting AL General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam addressing the Chief Adviser to the Caretaker Government at 3.30 pm yesterday. The team also lodged another letter to the Election Commission to discuss the polls schedule.

"The State of Emergency in effect across the country turning the whole country into a jail on a large scale. Due to this, confusion still persist among countrymen whether polls would be held in a peaceful manner," Syed Ashraful stated saying, "Many things of the government is now under question due to their controversial measures and acts."
