Admission seeker drowns in DU pond

An admission seeker drowned in the Shahidullah Hall pond at Dhaka University (DU) yesterday.

Mahmudul Haq Saikat, son of Rezaul Haq of Chamelibagh in the city, came to DU to buy admission form for Institute of Business Administration (IBA) admission test.

Saikat secured GPA-5 in this year's HSC examination from city's Notre Dame College.

Sources in the special branch of police said Saikat went to the Fazlul Haq Hall to meet one of his house tutors Amirul Islam who is a resident of the hall.

At around 11:00am, Saikat went to the pond in between Shahidullah Hall and Fazlul Haq Muslim Hall along with his two friends Nahid and Sumit for taking a bath.

Witnesses said Saikat suddenly started swimming towards the opposite side of the pond but drowned in the middle.

Students and employees of the hall rescued him after half an hour and rushed him to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared him dead.

Police handed over the body of deceased to his family members at around 4:30pm.

Rezaul Karim, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station, told The Daily Star that Saikat's father has filed a general dairy with Shahbagh PS saying that it was an accident and no one is responsible for it.
