Vegetables prices drop in capital

Prices of almost all vegetables came down in different kitchen markets in the capital on Friday while prices of eggs, mug dal, tomato, domestic poultry and fish marked a fresh hike than last week.

People are partially satisfied as the prices of rice of different kinds, except minicate premier, remained stable while price of potato dropped by Tk 3 per kg and price of onion also came down by Tk 2 in the kitchen markets over last two days.

Prices of Atta (packet) rose higher by Tk 1-2 than the last week. Atta (Teer) was selling at Tk 52 each packet containing two kgs while that of Fresh was selling at Tk 48 -50.

In retail markets, a kg of potato was selling Tk 12-14 which had been sold at Tk 15 -18 last week. In the wholesale markets, a kg of potato was selling for Tk 9-11 yesterday.

A trader of Karwan Bazar wholesale market said adequate supply of potatoes in the last few days contributed to the price fall.

Here it may be mentioned, the prices of capital's different wholesale markets are almost same but sale-rates often vary from market to market and place to place.

Prices of soya bean oil of different brands came down by Tk 5 per litre while the non-brand ones by Tk 2-6 per litre in recent time.

Price of local and imported onions dropped by Tk 3-5 per kg this week. These were being sold yesterday for Tk 28-30 and Tk 24-26 per kg respectively.

Excepting tomato, most of the vegetables were selling at lesser price than those of last week. Price of tomato was on the rise by TK 5 to 8 per kg in the retail market while prices of bringal dropped by Tk 3 yesterday. Apart from these, each kg of green chilli, bean and bitter gourd respectively was selling for TK 18, 24 and 48 while a piece of cauliflower was sold at TK 10-12.

Asked about the price fall of the vegetables, one Moha mmad Hossain of Jatrabari said, "Due to the plenty of vegetables, prices of some essential commodities have fallen. The overall situation of the market is coming under control."

Talking to The Bangladesh Today, one rickshaw-puller, who was seen to buy a cauliflower from the same market for Tk 10, expressed his satisfaction over the price.

"About 10 days back, it was sold Tk 20. We are praying for the incumbent government so that they would be able to bring down the prices of essentials to within our means," he added.

Meanwhile, price of mug dal has increased by Tk 10- 15 in the markets while those of other pulses remained unchanged. One kg mug dal was selling at Tk 85 at yesterday's market.

In many areas, the local domestic eggs are being sold at Tk 30 - 32 per four. People are worried about the price spiral of the eggs as they are paying Tk 28-30 for four eggs. An egg vender told this correspondent, short supply of eggs is the main cause of this price hike.

On the other hand, prices of mutton and beef remain unchanged but the prices of domestic poultry spiraled up yesterday.

Beef sells Tk 220 per kg while mutton is selling at Tk 350 to 360. Besides, one kg of domestic poultry was selling for Tk 210-220 per kg, which is about Tk 10-15 higher than last week. Meanwhile, the broiler poultry price drooped by about Tk 10.

Consumers claimed, fish prices are high at this moment and it is increasing day by day. The authorities concerned should take necessary steps in this regard.
