Tk 100 crore worth computers, accessories likely to be sold
With a view to using computer as a tool for culturing merit and knowledge, a nine-day City IT Computer Fair begins on Thurs-day at the BCS Computer City of IDB Bhaban at Agargaon in the capital. This year the slogan of the fair is "IT leads the flow of change."
Speaking at a press conference at the National Press Club on Monday, BCS president Mazibur Rahman Swapon said "We sold computers and accessories worth Tk 100 crore in the last year's fair. I hope this year we will be able to cross the last year's selling record," he said adding that "Bangladesh can become a mid-income country in the next 10 years if we properly tap the expertise of IT industry."
Commerce Minister Lt Col (Retd) Faruq Khan is expected to inaugurate the fair as the chief guest. State Mini-ster for Scie-nce and Infor-mation and Com-munication Technology Ministry, Yafez Osman will be present as the special guest.
Mazibur Rahman said the world has turned into a global village due to unprecedented development of information and communication technologies. In present time, lagging in IT is tantamount to lagging behind all progress.
The organisers of the fair said visitors would be able to buy personal computers from the fair at a minimum cost of Tk 17,000.
Products ranging from clone and brand computers, mouse, CDs, key boards, speakers, CD-rom drives, MP3, MP4, digital cameras, laptops, printers, and scanners will be displayed at the fair.
The organisers said that the Fair Committee will accord a reception to language veteran Abdul Matin and Lt Gen (Retd) Harun-ar-Rashid, a freedom fighter. Language veteran Abdul Matin will be accorded reception on the fair premises on Feb 28, while Lt Gen (Retd) Harun-ar-Rashid will be accorded reception on March 1.
A total of 156 stalls along with 10 others IT based non-profitable organisations will showcase their products at the nine-day fair styled 'City IT-2009' organised by BCS that begins on February 26 and will continue till March 6.
The fair will remain open for all with a Tk 10 entry ticket. However, school students and disabled person will enjoy free entrance, which opens from 10:00am to 7:00pm everyday.
