Nat’l Rabindra Sangeet festival begins May 5

Five-day national Rabindra Sangeet festival titled '20th Jatiyo Rabindra Sangeet Utsab' will begin at Shawkat Osman Memorial Auditorium of the Central Public Library at Shahbagh in the city on May 5.

Bangladesh Rabindra Sangeet Shilpi Sangstha (BRSSS) will organise the festival like previous years to celebrate the 148th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.

This year organisers will give honour to the veteran and noted tabla player Md Shahjahan for his outstanding contribution in the field of Rabindra Sangeet. Everyday festival programmes will be held at the Shawkat Osman Memorial Auditorium of the Central Public Library.

This year festival will be sacrificed to the late poet and artistes Syed Shamsul Huda, artiste Syed Zobayer and those artistes who died for the last one year.

Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University AAMS Arefin Siddiqui inaugurated the festival as chief guest. He will inaugurate the festival at 6:30pm.

Recitation and musical show will be presented at 7:00pm on the opening day of the festival.

On the second day of the festival, on May 6, an open discussion on Rabindranath Tagore will be held at 5:30pm. Later recitation and musical presentation will be held. On the third day, another open discussion will be held like previous day.

On the fourth day, May 8, also birthday of Rabindranath Tagore (Baishakh 25), get together of the Shilpi Sangstha members will be held in the morning. The 86th birthday of veteran and noted artiste Kalim Sharafi will be celebrated at 11:15am. Then a documentary made by Satyajit Roy will be screened at 11:30pm. In the afternoon recitation and musical presentation of Tagore will be held on that day.

On the concluding day, on May 9, a special musical presentation on Rabindranath Tagore will be held.

A press conference was held at the National Press Club yesterday afternoon to disclose the programme schedule of the festival.

Noted Tagore singer and General Secretary of the BRSSS Tapan Mahmud, Nahar Jamil, Salma Akbar, Sajed Akbar, Fahim Hossain Chowdhury, among other Tagore artistes and members of the Shilpi Sangstha, were present at the press conference.
